What Dr. Mitzi Lewis Loves Most About Being An Optometrist
We recently asked Dr. Mitzi Lewis a few questions about her career. Here are her answers. We thought you’d find them interesting!
How old were you when you decided to become an optometrist? What circumstances helped you decide?
“I was in the third grade. My dad, Dr. Lynn Herndon, came to my class to talk about optometry and I was enamored!! I told him at dinner that night that I was going to be an eye doctor.”
Where did you attend school and how long have you been practicing?
“I attended UMSL-College of Optometry and have been practicing for 12 years.”
What advice would you give to someone who is considering a career in Optometry?
“Find a job in the field and learn all you can about it. I started working at the Vision Clinic when I was 16 and it helped me know that I was making the right choice. Once you get to school, study hard, have fun, and know that no matter how tough the going gets, it’s worth it in the end.”
What is one thing you find most satisfying and fulfilling about being an optometrist?
“My patients! I love to go into an exam room, problem solve, and know that they will come out of the exam room better than they were when they came in that day. I love that I rarely have to give someone bad news. Most of what we do is positive, just helping them to see better or feel better. I love that in the time I am with them I learn about their kids, grand kids or pets. It makes me feel wonderful that they want to share their lives with me. I love my patients!”
We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Dr. Mitzi Lewis better! And, as always, THANKS for being our valued patients and friends!
